Vietnam is continuing its digitalization of immigration and border-control procedures.
Following the launch of the electronic pre-arrival declaration system at Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City earlier this year, the Vietnamese authorities are expected to expand the system nationwide from 1 July 2026. Resident Vietnam, in this article, offers clarification on the matter and explains what travelers, employers, and mobility teams should expect.
Under the new framework, passengers arriving in Vietnam will also be required to complete a health declaration form. The declaration is expected to be submitted through the same digital platform currently being used at Tan Son Nhat Airport.
From Pilot Project to Nationwide Rollout
The system was initially introduced at Tan Son Nhat International Airport as part of the government’s broader efforts to modernize arrival procedures and enhance health monitoring capabilities at border checkpoints.
The platform allows travelers to submit arrival information electronically before entering Vietnam, reducing the need for paper forms upon arrival.
From 1 July 2026, the same system is expected to be deployed across international airports and border checkpoints nationwide.
What Information Will Travelers Need to Provide?
Although the final implementation guidelines may vary depending on the port of entry, travelers should expect to provide information such as:
- passport information;
- flight and travel details;
- accommodation information in Vietnam;
- health-related declarations as required by the authorities.
The electronic declaration generates a QR code confirmation. Although authorities may request it during immigration or arrival procedures, verification does not appear to be conducted consistently at this stage.
What Does This Mean for Travelers and Employers?
With the introduction of the nationwide pre-arrival declaration system, travelers are encouraged to complete the required declaration before departure to minimize the risk of delays upon arrival, notwithstanding the fact that the declaration process itself is generally quick and easy to complete.
This requirement applies regardless of whether the traveler holds an e-visa, a tourist, business or work visa, or a Temporary Residence Card so it will also affect:
- business travelers;
- foreign employees entering Vietnam for work assignments;
- expatriates currently in Vietnam;
- accompanying family members;
Employers and mobility teams should consider updating their travel instructions and onboarding procedures to ensure that assignees are aware of the new requirement before travelling.
A Further Step Towards Digital Immigration Procedures
The expansion of the electronic arrival declaration system reflects Vietnam’s broader move toward digital government services and paperless administrative procedures.
In recent years, the authorities have introduced a number of online platforms covering immigration, work permits, business registration, and public administrative services. The nationwide implementation of pre-arrival declarations represents another step in this digital transformation.
